Simple present vs. present progressive
Claire smokes . She is not smoking right now. She is on the subway.
Nicholas drinks beer. Right now, he is drinking water. It's early in the morning.

Use the present tense to talk about habits, things you do every day, or facts.

>> Claire smokes cigarettes.
This is Claire's habit.
>> Helena drinks coffee every morning.
This is Helena's habitual action.
>> We speak Italian and English.
This is a fact.

Use the present progressive to talk about something happening at the moment or right now . The present progressive is commonly used in English to talk about the present moment.

>> Martin is smoking a cigar now.
>> Nicholas is drinking water.
>> Claire is not smoking .
These things are happening at the present moment, or right now.
