Present perfect with 'since' and 'for'

Claire has been at the conference since Tuesday. She has been staying at the hotel for a week. Nicholas has been looking for Claire for a few days. He has liked her since the first day they met.

Use since and the present perfect to talk about something that began in the past at a specific time and continues into the present. To form this use of the present perfect, use: present perfect + since + specific time.

since + time of day
since+ day of week
since + month
since + year

>> They have been here since Tuesday.
>> I have been here since 10:00.
>> Washington has been the capital of the United States since 1800.

Use for and the present perfect to talk about a length of time that began at an unspecific time and continues into the present. To form this use of the present perfect, use: to have + been + verb + -ing + for + minutes/hours/days/years.

for + number of minutes
for + number of days
for + number of weeks
for + number of years

>> Claire has been at the conference for 2 days.
>> Martin and Helena have lived in New York for 10 years.
