Surprising Treasures
Read the passage.

Do you have any old things in your house? Do you know what they are worth? Before you sell or give anything away, have it appraised.

Mona found several old salt and pepper shakers when she was cleaning out her basement. The porcelain shakers had intricate gold etchings on the sides. When she took them to an antique store, they offered her $500. Helen found 2 beaded dresses that belonged to her great grandmother. The dresses were in a box in her mother's attic. They were hand-stitched in Europe in the early 1900's. She showed the dresses to an appraiser and found out that each dress was worth over $3000!

Many people have old items stored in basements or attics. They don't realize that these things could be worth a lot of money. Not all old items, however, turn out to be valuable. Elory bought an old vase from her aunt's yard sale. All of the items at the sale were from her aunt's travels around the world. Elory bought the vase for $20. When she went to an antique store, the owner told her it was worth $10.
