Activity: What am I Watching?
Objective: Practice the present progressive tense
Level: Intermediate-advanced
Materials: None
Start the activity by telling students to imagine that the board is a television. Tell them that you are "watching" television right now, and that you are going to describe what you see. Watch the "television/board" and describe the "imaginary program" that you are watching. Make sure you describe a program that students are familiar with and that you use the present continuous tense.
For instance, "There are a man and a woman on TV. The man is speaking. He's reading aloud a question. There are four possible answers on the screen. The woman is sweating. She's thinking about the question and she's scratching her head…" (Answer: Who Wants to be a Millionaire?) The first student to guess the name of the program gets to think of another one and describe it.
This activity can also work with types of programs (comedy, commercial, news programs…), movies, and so on. There are many possibilities. Just make sure that students use the present continuous when describing what they are "watching."
