Activity: Word Groups

Vocabulary: Vocabulary of the week (mixed with old vocabulary)
Level: All levels
Materials: Blackboard or worksheet

Make a vocabulary list of about 20 words. It is useful to mix new words with old words for this activity to help students make connections. Put the list on the board or hand out the lists to students. Tell them that they will make word groups and then give each group a title. Encourage them to get as creative as they want. To get them started, model what you want them to do. Think out loud as you pick out three or four words and write them down. For example: paper clip, ring and car might be grouped together. Put the three together and ask the class for help finding a title. Tell them that the title you are thinking of is metal. Explain that all three are made of metal. Have them get started. The first time doing this activity is sometimes a bit slow, but as students get used to it, they get more creative and have more fun with it. Ask the groups to share their categories and word groups with the class.
