    Activities

Activity I: Interior Design Styles (5 minutes)
Bring several magazines to class. Show pictures of different rooms and decorating styles to students. Let them talk about which ones they like or dislike and why. Together, come up with a list of different styles. Help them with suggestions such as modern, classic, minimalist, baroque, art deco, and so on. If you have access to the Internet in class, check out some interior design and/or furniture store sites.

    Activity II: Vocabulary (20 minutes)
Divide the class in small groups. Hand out copies of Printout I (vocabulary list). Each group should choose some words from the list. Make sure all words are covered. Students have to find photographs that show or define each of their words. When everybody has finished, students have to present their words to the rest of the class, using pictures. If most of the words of the vocabulary list are new to students, you may want to hang these pictures and the words on the classroom walls, so students can refer to them whenever necessary.

Activity III: Vocabulary Practice (15 minutes)
If your students need vocabulary practice, hand out copies of Printout II. Students have to fill in the blanks according to the house or apartment they live in. Then, ask them to share the results with the class. This activity also gives students the opportunity to practice vocabulary about different rooms and parts of a house or apartment.

Activity IV: Reading: Feng shui (20 minutes)
Write the words feng shui on the board. Ask students whether they know what language it is (Chinese) and whether they know what it means (its an ancient Chinese art). Tell students that they are going to read a text about feng shui. Hand out copies of Printout III. Help students with words they may find difficult, such as forces, ancient, harmony, believed, hard, soft, healing, environment, layout, and flows smoothly.

Activity V: Prepositions of Location (20 minutes)
Review the following prepositions and expressions of location with students: at, on, under, in, on the right of, on the left of, next to, around, in front of, behind, near, far from, Explain their meaning with different objects and/or pictures. Display some of the pictures used earlier and ask questions about the position of furniture, such as "Where is the plant? Is it behind the table?" Practice using the prepositions. Ask students to ask similar questions. Then students should describe one of the rooms in a picture, using the prepositions and vocabulary they have just learned. Finally, hand out copies of Printout IV.

Activity VI: Your Room (10 minutes)
Explain the modal verb should. Explain that it is always followed by the simple verb (infinitive without the to): You should go, we should read. It's used describe something that in your opinion makes sense or is correct (This table should go here; We should speak only English in class) and to recommend something (You should read this book).

Then, ask students to think about a room of the house or apartment they live in. Does it follow feng shui rules described in the text they have just read? Discuss briefly. Ask students to write six sentences describing the room. They can use the sentences in Activity III as reference. If you have time, discuss why they like or dislike that room, what they'd like to change (encourage them to use should).

    Activity VII: Debate (20-30 minutes)
Read the sentences below and discus them in class.

    1. Feng shui is nonsense. It's just a profitable business at the moment because its "in."

    2. People should not hire interior designers. It's a waste of money. People should decorate their own home. It's more personal.

    3. Furniture should be strictly functional. People should not spend a lot of money on furniture or pay attention to style.

    4. Every room in a house should follow the same style.

    5. Every piece of furniture in a room should follow the same style.

If students need help, write the following expressions on the board:
    In my opinion, ...
    I agree. / I don't agree.
    It depends on ...
    Its true, but ...
    ... is important.
