Activity A: Finding the Subject and Verb

Circle the simple subject and underline the main verb of each sentence.


  1. Although she was carrying a heavy package, the older woman still refused to sit.

  2. Whenever I feel upset, I order an ice cream sundae without nuts.


  3. Do you want to go to the symphony tonight even though you have a headache?


  4. Since you think bungee jumping is such a good idea, you can rent a cord to try it.


Activity B: Complete the Sentence

Decide whether the following phrases are main clauses or subordinate clauses. If it is a subordinate clause, add a main clause to make it a complete sentence.


  1. Whether you like it or not.


  2. Even though I only eat certain kinds of fish.


  3. Wanting something so much that you can taste it is not enough.


  4. Despite her attempt to run faster.


  5. Therefore I shower every day.


  6. Because of the high cost of living in Los Angeles.


  7. Underneath the table where the kids were having a tea party.


  8. Sitting under a tree in the late afternoon with the sunlight streaming down on her face.
