Everybody Needs a Pet Animals have been kept as pets by people all over the world for thousands of years. Even what some people might consider unusual pets, such as alligators, monkeys, and raccoons, are not uncommon in some parts of the world. Pets, no matter what kind, can make playful and interesting companions. Pets can make an owner feel better and can even help to lower the owner's blood pressure. Besides being great friends, many pets also serve other useful purposes. People use dogs to guard property, to herd livestock, and to assist blind people. Cats can keep homes and barns free from mice and rats. In the United States, exotic pets such as alligators and raccoons are also capable of bringing tremendous joy into the lives of their owners. However, the decision to get an exotic pet should never be taken lightly. An exotic pet often has needs which are not always easy to meet. Exotic pet or not: it is important to learn as much as possible about a pet before bringing one home!
