Likes and Dislikes
Use of Gustar

You might already know how to say me gusta . Gustar really does not mean "to like" but "to please".

>> Las manzanas me gustan.
Apples please me.

The "me" in "me gustan" is really an indirect object pronoun . Notice that the verb agrees with the subject "manzanas."

Write the literal translation of these examples.

El cine me gusta.
  Cinema pleases me.

La televisión no me gusta.
  Television does not please me.

Las películas de terror no me gustan.
  Horror movies don't please me.

Alfred Hitchcock me gusta como director.
  Alfred Hitchcock pleases me as a director.

To express that you really like something or that it really interests you, say:

Me encanta I love (literally such and such charms me)
Me apasiona I am passionate about (literally such and such enthralls me)
Me entusiasma like in English, such and such excites me
Me fascina like in English, such and such fascinates me
Me interesa like in English, such and such interests me

To express your dislikes, you can say:

No me interesa such and such doesn't interest me
No me dice nada such and such doesn't do anything for me (literally, doesn't speak to me)

To be more emphatic, say:

>> El cine no me interesa nada .
>> El cine no me interesa en absoluto .
