Looking for Something?
What is the Subjunctive...Good For?
Looking for something? If you're looking for something you've lost, you can say:
>>
Busco un coche que
tiene
dos puertas.
But if you're looking for something you would like to have, you would say:
>>
Busco un coche que
tenga
dos puertas.
The last example uses a new form of the verb called the
subjunctive
. The subjunctive is used to talk about things that are hypothetical.
In the first example, you could be looking for your car in a garage. You're thinking of a particular car. You use
tiene
.
In the second example, you could be looking to buy a car with two doors. Since you don't have a specific car in mind, you use the subjunctive
tenga
.
Here are some more examples.
Example 1
>>
Busco una casa que
tiene
dos pisos.
>>
Busco una casa que
tenga
dos pisos.
In the first example, you might be driving around a neighborhood looking for a particular house, a house that you know exists in this area, like a friend's house.
In the second example, you might be talking to a realtor. You would like to buy a two-story house, but you don't know of any house in particular. For all you know, there might not be a two-story house on the market.
Example 2
>>
Busco a un actor que
es
muy alto.
>>
Busco a un actor que
sea
muy alto.
In the first example, you know the man you're looking for. It's a particular actor. You might have lost him on the set
In the second example, you might be posting an add. You would like to find an actor, any actor, that is tall. You don't have anyone specific in mind.
A Note for the Wise
All the tenses you've learned up to now are used to talk about real, objective situations. They are all in the
indicative
mood.
