Travel Tip: Categorizing Restaurants

"My boyfriend and I were looking for a place to have a romantic dinner in Bologna. The guidebook recommended a restaurant that was right around the corner from our hotel. We decided to try it out. We knew right away that it was not what we wanted, but we were the only ones there and felt pressured to stay. A one-course dinner for two ended up costing more than the hotel room! But we did get a free blue liqueur out of it."

Before wandering the streets of Bologna (or any other Italian city) looking for a place to eat, learn about the different eateries available to you.

Ristorante often expensive and fancy, make sure you see the menu before sitting down
Trattoria family run, home-style cooking, moderately priced
Tavola calda cafeteria-style restaurant, moderately priced
Osteria informal and rustic wine bar that serves food, moderately priced
Paninoteca sandwich bar
Pizzeria pizza parlor, sometimes sold a taglio (by the slice)
Bar serves coffee and snacks

Menus are often displayed at restaurant entrances. Be sure to take a look at food prices and service charges before going in. Your best bet is to stick to the trattoria. Although the ambiance may not be as elegant as that of the ristorante, the value is much better. If you're looking for a hip osteria in Bologna, try Osteria Broccaindosso by the Law School. For a relatively low price, you get a huge sampling of antipasti and all you can eat dessert!
